Add support for Components

In short

The language should support components as its building blocks.
A component is a small function abstraction to help the creation of UIs.

Syntax

component GreetingsComponent (user)
  Title(
    If(user.admin, "Hello admin!", "Hello, {user.name}!")
  )
}
  • It is defined with the component keyword
  • It should have a name
  • It can have parameters
  • It can be called as a function
  • It can receive any prop type, including another component

AST - Compiler back end

In short

Before going forward with the implementation I think this project need to have more though before bringing ideas to life.
Many language projects of mine have failed simply because I could not tie the front end to the back end and vice versa, just because they where not planned correctly to be able to be connected.

So, starting with the back end, here I describe how to represent the internal data before compilation so it gets easier to work backwards.

Component without parameters

{
  name: 'component',
  params: {},
  body: [],
  meta: {
    keywordPosition: [1, 1],
    namePosition: [1, 11],
    openParamPosition: [1, 19],
    closeParamPosition: [1, 20],
    openBodyPosition: [1, 22],
    closeBodyPosition: [1, 23],
  }
}

Its code:

component Example () {}

Component with parameters

{
  name: 'component',
  params: {
    user: {
      position: [1, 21]
    }
  },
  body: [],
  meta: {
    keywordPosition: [1, 0],
    namePosition: [1, 12],
    openBracePosition: [1, 20],
    closeBracePosition: [1, 20],
  }
}

Its code:

component Example (user) {}

Component with component calls

{
  name: 'component',
  params: {
    user: {
      position: [1, 21]
    }
  },
  body: [
    {
      name: 'componentCall',
      params: [
        {
          name: 'stringLiteral',
          value: 'Hello, {user.name}!'
        }
      ],
      meta: {
        namePosition: [2, 2],
        openBracePosition: [2, 8],
        closeBracePosition: [3, 2],
      }
    }
  ],
  meta: {
    keywordPosition: [1, 0],
    namePosition: [1, 12],
    openBracePosition: [1, 20],
    closeBracePosition: [1, 20],
  }
}
component Example (user) {
  Title("Hello, {user.name}!")
}
