ama's Introduction

charlotte-ruby/ama

A repository to ask the members of @charlotte-ruby anything.

If you have a question about the group, suggestions for meetups, or really anything, this is just the joint for you.

Ask a question

Asking a question is as easy as creating a new issue on this project.

We'll try to answer it as soon as we can get to it. Once answered the issue will be closed just so we know what's been covered, but don't worry- if you have any further questions just respond in the thread and someone will get back to you soon. Feel free to ask a question on any old issue too, even if you didn't create it.

Read some questions

Check out the Closed Issues filter on this repository to browse questions answered in the past. We try to use this as a public forum and email replacement that everyone can see, so feel free to dig into some of the older threads.

ama's Issues

What will help grow Charlotte's junior Ruby community the most?

From @binarymason on March 9, 2017 13:40

The purpose of this issue is to clarify on what the most impactful application of effort would be to grow the junior Charlotte ruby community (to become more employable).

What that purpose in my mind, there a few obvious questions that come to mind.

  1. What are the things that the growing junior ruby community in Charlotte needs?
  2. Out of those things, what need would be most helpful if addressed?
  3. How can we most effectively address that need?
  4. What things should we consider to make things sustainable in order to avoid burnout?
  5. What would be the most effective time/place for a meetup?

Here's my initial stab at the questions above:

  1. What are the things that the growing junior ruby community in Charlotte needs?

Fun, Mentorship, Sense of Community, Resources, Jobs, Continuing Education

  1. Out of those things, what need would be most helpful if addressed?

I think the most impactful things would be in this order: Mentorship, Fun, Jobs

  1. How can we most effectively address that need?
  • Having a regular meetup with regular problems to solve. Challenges are a must. Maybe have a mixture of live demos and/or pair programming.

  • Grow reputation and network to have a pulse on jobs; become a place recruiters go to for ruby candidates; be able to give recommendations to potential employers.

  1. What things should we consider to make things sustainable in order to avoid burnout?
  • Frequency of meetups
  • Keeping regular content/challenges going
  1. What would be the most effective time/place for a meetup?

I think Skookum would keep things consistent. With a once a month meetup already going, I think we could do an additional two meetups a month at the exact same time 7-9. With real world projects, I tend to think every week would be better, but I'm concerned about burnout.
