ooocanadaresearchnetwork's Introduction

OOO Canada Research Network

The OOO Canada network supports students, early career researchers and academic professionals in their efforts to promote open, transparent approaches to knowledge sharing. We focus specifically on Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data.

THE GITHUB REPO

This github repository is a method for decentralizing leadership of the network, rotate responsibilities, and keep each other (and the public) updated of activities at different campuses. It will also be a place to discuss issues and plan meetings!

How does it work?

Visit our projects page to see different aspects of our project management. Currently this is divided into (1) scheduling our monthly community calls and (2)campus-specific updates. We can also add additional columns in the future for long term agendas or campaigns (columns are just clumped to-do lists and updates lumped by category or theme).

Each project note links to a Github issue, which acts as a discussion thread and to-do list all in one. For example, this issue is on planning September's community call, while this issue is on providing updates on OA advocacy at McMaster) University. You can visit the full list of issues here.

Who can contribute to the repo?

Anyone with a Github account. Please make a Github account! We encourage anyone interested in advancing Open on their Canadian campus to participate in discussion and setting goals on this repo. Everyone is welcome.

ooocanadaresearchnetwork's Issues

OER at University of British Columbia

UBC FOSS been trying to aggregate and keep track of OER and FOSS work happening at UBC -- not sure if you might be interested in including some of this information in your project:

  • ubc-oer - Open Educational Resources (including projects, open textbooks, MOOCs, and open access journals
  • ubc-orgs - UBC Organizations that have a presence on Github (and are presumably contributing to OER/FOSS)
  • awesome-ubc-foss - A curated list of FOSS projects at UBC

What we've discovered in this process is that there is a lot going on in terms of open research, OER, and FOSS on campus, but very little in the way of centralized information for people who want to keep up with everything. We are hoping this information helps a bit to make it easier for people who want to get involved in the community to know who's doing what.

It's great to see initiatives like this gaining momentum in schools across the country!

Open Data in Experimental Mechanics

Hi,

we are at the Laboratory of Multiscale Mechanics at Polytechnique Montreal and started a project for Open Data in Experimental Mechanics [0]. We realized this issue during our work in the laboratory

The availability of experimental results is limited because they are scattered in publications. The access to experimental data could be beneficial for mechanical engineers and computational engineers to improve their research. In publications details necessary to reproduce the experiment or design the simulation for a benchmark are often missing. A platform is therefore needed to share experimental data sets in mechanics, rating it with respect to reproducibility and quality of the experimental setup for benchmarks with simulation results. Thus, both communities could enhance the understanding of material behavior and fasten their research.

And started to work on the following project as a solution

Accessible reliable and fully described experimental data is critically lacking in the materials/mechanics community to validate accurate predictive models. Our project proposes a platform for researchers to present their experimental results as standardized datasets. Experimental researchers can then obtain a DOI for their datasets, making them citable by others.

We think it could be interesting to advertise it here and maybe find new collaborators.
