And moving to 7 was a Major change for our users (and a big support burden on us).

Biggest support burden of upping the java version was due to Apple making it hard to seamlessly upgrade the java version. Users themselves didn't care all that much as long as the requirements were clear.

So far we've been lucky that no other major tool seems to dictate which version of java users should have on their machine. Otherwise collisions could happen.
