Highly testable dead simple web server written in Typescript

Why?

Nest.js looks nice. But its learning curve is too stiff.(TBH, I still don't know how to redirect dynamically.) Most of people probably do not need to know how Interceptor, Pipe and other things work. It might be good for some enterprize level projects.

But using raw expressjs is also quite painful. To test express apps, you have to use supertest or chai-http things. If you use them, you will lose debugging and error stack while testing because they send actual http request internally. Otherwise, you have to mock up all params, req, res and next, of RequestHandler of express.js.

To deal with the testing problem, inversify-express-utils could be a solution. But it does not support many decorators. To render with view engine like pug, we need to use res.render method. But the only solution is using @response decorator. It means you have to mock up Response in your test. So technically it is super hard to test routes rendering view engine.

Luckily, TachiJS tackles those problems. If you have other ideas, please create an issue!!

How to use

Install tachijs

npm i tachijs reflect-metadata

Add two compiler options, experimentalDecorators and emitDecoratorMetadata, to tsconfig.json.

There are lots of ways to implement express middlewares.

Apply middlewares to controllers and methods

Sometimes, you might want to apply middlewares to several methods only.

Configure router options

Tachijs will create and register a router for each controller.

So you can provide router options via @controller decorator.

@reqBody supports validation via class-validator.

Please install class-validator package first.

Custom parameter decorators!

If you're using passport, you should want to access user data from req.user. @handlerParam decorator make it possible. The decorator gets a selector which accepts express's req, res and next. So all you need to do is decide what to return from thoes three parameters.

Bind methods of req or res before exposing

You can also pass methods of req or res which are augmented by express module. Some of them might need the context of them. So please bind methods before exposing like the below example.

Moreover, tachijs exposes metadata of parameters to forth argument. So you can make your custom validator for query with class-transformer-validator like below. (req.body is also using this.)

Redirection, Rendering via pug and others...

Techinically, you don't have to access res to response data. But, if you want to redirect or render page via pug, you need to access res.redirect or res.render. Sadly, if you do, you have make mockup for res.

But, with tachijs, you can tackle this problem.

BaseController

If you need to use many types of result, you probably want BaseController. Just import it once, and your controller can instantiate results easily.

BaseController#context

You may want to share some common methods via your own base controller. But, sadly, it is not possible to use decorators to get objects from req or res and services provided by @inject.

To make it possible, we introduce context. Which expose req, res and inject method via context if your controller is extended from BaseController.

Customize result

If you want to have customized result behavior, you can do it with BaseResult. BaseResult is an abstract class which coerce you to define how to end the route by providing execute method. (Every built-in result is extended from BaseResult.)

Let's see our implementation of RedirectResult.

Dependency injection

To make controllers more testable, tachijs provides dependency injection.

Let's think we have some mailing service, MailerService. While developing or testing, we probably don't want our server to send real e-mail everytime.

Bad practices

Please check this section too to keep your controllers testable.

Execute res.send or next inside of controllers or @handlerParam

Please don't do that. It just make your controller untestable. If you want some special behaviors after your methods are executed, please try to implement them with BaseResult.

It marks method as a request handler.

  • method Target http methods, 'get', 'post', 'put', 'patch', 'delete', 'options', 'head' or 'all' are available. ('all' means any methods.)
  • path Target path.

BaseController

A base for controller which have lots of helper methods for returning built-in results. Also, it allows another way to access properties of req, res and inject without any decorators.

  • #context tachijs will set req, res and inject method to this property. So, when unit testing, it is not defined.
    • #context.req Raw express request instance
    • #context.req Raw express response instance
    • #inject<S>(key: string): S A method to access a registered service by the given key. It is almost same to @inject decorator. (@inject<ServiceTypes.SomeService> someService: SomeService => const someService = this.inject<SomeService>(ServiceTypes.SomeService))

Results

BaseResult

All of result classes must be extended from BaseResult because tachijs can recognize results by instanceof BaseResult.

It has only one abstract method which must be defined by descendant classes.

Minimize to system tray (windows)

Is there a way to minimize Boostnote to the system tray on Windows when I close the [X} button (or the minimize button) in order to leave it running but not on the task bar but the system tray. If not, that would be a wonderful feature to have.

Greetings and keep up the good work

In Windows version, Alt+Tab toggles menu bar

In Windows version of Boostnote, when I press Alt+Tab to switch between app, Boostnote also hides/shows the menu bar.

I would expect it to show/hide the menu bar when single Alt pressed and then released, but not on Alt+Tab.

32-bits Debian Support

We will really appreciate it if you release 32 bits versions. I saw the application on a friend's computer and I love it. Please can you release the support for 32 bits (I am currently using Windows and Linux) both with a 32 bits architecture.

Downloadable is not working

I downloaded one .dmg package(v0.16.1) from here and my Mac wouldn't allow me to run it:

“Boostnote” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.

Why is that? And apparently, this one is different from the one I download from boostnote.io, this one is larger. Shouldn't they be the same (always up-to-date)?

How do I disable markdownlint?

After the upgrade i see multiple warnings about markdown which I don't want and find it really annoying. I cannot find an option in preferences to disable this linting. Please help me.

Cant Edit anymore

After latest Update 0.12.1 I can only edit the content of a note by using the "Toggle Mode" Icon.

No matter what I select in Preferences. Normally I use "Edit on right click" but also "Edit on double click" both are currently not working. Everytime I want to edit a note I need to toggle through the modes to ge tto the full markdown editor :(

Any Ideas?

Are there no checksums for the downloaded versions? This is especially important for windows.

Feature Request: Add Inline Images

I really love Boostnote, it's a indispensable tool on my workflow.
But, there's something that I really miss: inline images support (from PC and clipboard content)
Used to use Quiver (Boostnote alternative for macOS) and it was one of the most killer features.
Hope you read it and fill my request.

markdown TOC can't jump to title V0.11.17

I use BoostnoteV0.11.15 before,It can jump to title from TOC, But when I update to V0.11.17, It can't jump any more.

Consuming 100% of CPU

Hello, noticing this kind of behaviour for the 3rd time for the last week. My notes are just a few (~40 notes)

  • OS: macOS 10.15.3 19D76 x86_64
  • Host: MacBookPro14,1
  • Kernel: 19.3.0
  • CPU: Intel i5-7360U (4) @ 2.30GHz
  • GPU: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640

Editor styling not working after latest update

Today a new update was pushed. After the install the editor themes don't work anymore. I was using a dark them. But now the editor part is white with no code highlighting. Only the default editor has code highlighting. Hope someone can provide a fix.

The Loss of Hours worth of Notes

Boostnote is an amazing app, I love the design and really the best notetaking app out there, however this recent update has made it feel clunky and has made me downgrade to previous releases of Boostnote. First off, for some reason when I use offline note taking I still run into the issue of when i close the app it doesn't save all of my notes (at least half the time). I had this same issue when storing my notes online, so I decided to move my notes to being offline since I figured that it may something to do with that, however that hasn't been the case, I recently lost easily 2-3 hours worth of notes for no apparent reason. Regardless I love the app and I think you guys are doing an outstanding job. :) I look forward to what else you guys decide to add.

Code block theme does not work after latest update

Version: 0.11.17
Version prior to update: 0.11.15
OS: Windows 10

After update to 0.11.17, code block theme stopped working. I am using the default theme for editor and overall UI, therefore found no issue with them. However, I saw, editor theme issue is already opened.

Analysis:
I found that there is code change in main.js after v0.11.15 at following code block. A new theme check has been added. Theme path hold the full path of theme path, instead of relative path. Therefore, when it gets added to appPath, a wrong path location is formed. Therefore, code block theme does not reflect.

Update website with the correct version, currently 0.1.2

The website version of boost note is 0.1.2, which might confuse new people like it did me lol, just thought I'd let you know that there might be others out there with the completely wrong version without knowing it.

There is no scroll bar on the "black-left-panel/column" listing the "storage locations"

Since upgrading to the newest version (0.15.0), The app in my mac lost the scroll bar on the "black-left-panel/column" that contains the list of the "storage locations".
The scrolling on the list is very important, so, please, fix this issue and put back the scroll bar for the mac version. Scroll bars for the other three panels (notes, raw text, formatted text) just work fine!, but no the storages one.

The boostnote .deb file sets various filesystem permissions to 775. This is a big security problem.

As noted when you install the boostnote-bin AUR package:

Mermaid graphs size

Hi. First of all thank you for super cool notebook and that you add support for mermaid charts. But one thing doesn't let me use their full power.

If I generate small simple graphs they look OK or even too big (letters, squares). But if I need more nodes and leafs its veiwport stay fixed, but font-size and squares start decreasing and at some point it is unable to read text in the blocks. From the user perspective It would be better to have fixed font size and resize automatically viewport to fit the graph content.

Can't re-install after upgrade to Ubuntu 20.10

After upgrade to Ubuntu 20.10, Boostnote disappeared from the system. On attempting to reinstall the latest .deb package, found that now it has an unmet dependency: gvfs-bin This package has been removed because it's deprecated so it won't be re-added.
