You cannot run PySimpleGUI as a thread....

I noted this in your code:

Thread(target = guiLoop).start() # start guiLoop thread

You cannot run PySimpleGUI as a thread. There is one call that is thread-safe that you can call from a thread write_event_value. This is how you can communicate from a thread to the mainthread that is running PySimpleGUI. tkinter will eventually catch that you're running in a thread and give you a warning or crash indicating it has found that tkinter is no longer running as the mainthread.
