Hi Gareth

This is concerning and should be investigated. I will look into it.
How many cells do you run on?

Thanks,
Steffen

Hi Steffen

I run with three cells. I could send you an esc/notor pair that have gone
pop if that helps.

Best
Gareth

Ps. I'm wondering whether the connection of power (naturally connecting power is noisy, on/off a few times before the plug is fully in) is cycling the mcu and it's ending up in an invalid state? Just guessing here as it's never during flight, only on power up..

Thanks for the info, that helps in pointing towards what it may be. How does a "burnt" ESC behave, does it still beep louder, or did that just happen once, when it got burned?
Also, what code version was on when it burned? There was a change of vdd monitor setting that may affect the behavior in the case of for example short power supply glitches.

Steffan

Regarding versions, I couldn't tell you the exact versions - but I can tell you I installed the latest version around September 2012, and again around March 2013. I know they weren't the same version, I think one was 9.XXX and another 10.XX.

The ESC makes the loud tune, the motor smokes, typically I then turn it off. When I turn it back on, the motor oscillates back and forth (~5-10Hz) rather than completing full revolutions and gets very hot. I've been wary of swapping motors/escs around to see if the motor was the cause, because I did this once and ended up with two sets of fried ESCs and motors.

The tune appears to be louder on the second switch on too.

So if you updated in March, was it then before or after March 20? Rev10.1 was released on that date, and included the vdd monitor enabling. Maybe you can check the code rev, even if the ESC is blown?

I will continue to think of other possible causes.
Maybe I should also inspect one of your blown ESCs. If you have a user on RCG or HF I can send you a PM with contact details.

I'm afraid I don't have my silabs programmer anymore as the avr was cannibalised for something else. I don't mind sending you one of the blown ones - you can pm me your address or email to drgowen AT gmail DOT com

I've ordered a new set of ESCs to replace the blheli ones - so this isn't urgent.

Hi Gareth

Did you send those ESCs? I still haven't received them.
