gitlab https://about.gitlab.com/ is the main open-source alternative to github. Since you can easily host your own repository management system, it would be great if binder would accept URLs pointing to arbitrary gitlab installations (not just gitlab.com).

First, thanks and 👏 for this awesome projects! Binder is amazing!

I saw that pip is complaining while installing modules:

So, could you (try to) upgrade pip (and in the same time, the main packages installed for all users)?

Here is an more visual example:

I am setting up an AWS Ubuntu 16.04 instance to run a mybinder deployment.

Following the instructions on http://docs.mybinder.org/custom-deployments I was able to start the server, but the status page on the web says the build and deploy servers are both down.

examining the logs with
pm2 log binder-build-start

I have the following errors.
