Update Training Section

Workshops for 2023 are tentatively scheduled for January 12, March 9, May 11, July 13, September 14, and November 9. Please check back here in December 2022 for confirmed dates and links to Eventbrite registration sites.

MAG Maps & Data workshops provide training in a hybrid learning setting. Choose whether you would like to attend in person or via Zoom.
Our training highlights two of our most popular map viewers – the Arizona Demographics and the Arizona Employer viewers – and introduces our wide array of publicly available data visualization tools and resources.

Participants choose the learning environment they are most comfortable in. This three-hour workshop will be held in person in our MAG Regional Conference Center while also being live streamed via Zoom to our online participants. We’ll cover a variety of topics in the following segments:
Population and Demographics
Economy and Employers
Education, Recreation, and Transportation

Select a date that fits your schedule. Click on a date to register via Eventbrite. All workshops run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Select the learning environment that best suits you. Only those who sign up for the online training will be given access to the Zoom link. Online class registrants will receive an email confirmation with a personalized link to the training landing page.

In person class registrants will receive an email confirmation with travel directions to MAG offices. Parking in our underground parking garage will be validated.

Those participating in person will need to bring their own laptop and power cord. We will provide power outlets.

All registrants will be emailed the hands-on exercises before the workshop begins. Printed exercises will be provided to in-person participants.

Come and explore MAG data resources, learn how to use the MAG map viewers to conduct searches for demographic and employer data, and discover other maps and data gems offered at MAG.

Training is free and open to the public and is especially helpful to anyone involved in community assessment, economic development, grant writing, market research, and planning, but our participants come from all walks of life.

Add new training dates

Can I get you to update the maps & data training page with the 2024 dates? However, the registration links are not yet available as we are still considering which platform to use. (There’s been an unfortunately sharp and sudden increase in pricing from Eventbrite, and IT has not decided if we will continue using them.)

So, under the “Live trainings for 2024 are scheduled for:” we need a disclaimer that registration links are not yet available, but to check back soon; and everywhere there is a “Sign up for training” button, it needs to be deactivated (grayed out).

Any chance you can do this before the end of the year?

Here are the 2024 dates:
Feb. 22
Mar. 28
Apr. 25
Aug. 22
Sep. 19
Oct. 24

Do you know which topic (or topic code) the govDelivery subscription widget at the bottom of the page is pointed to?

Changes/Updates to Training page

[11:35 AM] Merry Holmgren
I wasn't expecting to still see the Eventbrite link there, but I suppose that be okay since it leads to our Collections page and it's clear there are no future events as yet. As far as the rest goes, there's a few tweaks I'd ask for.

[11:36 AM] Merry Holmgren
"Please check back here in December 2022 for confirmed dates and links to Eventbrite registration sites."

Add "updated" before "links".

[11:37 AM] Merry Holmgren
"Participants choose the learning environment they are most comfortable in This three-hour workshop..."

Add period (".") after "in".

[11:37 AM] Merry Holmgren
"Select a date that fits your schedule. Click on a date to register via Eventbrite."

Replace second sentence with: "Click on the Eventbrite Link and enroll in the session of your choice." (Keep the third sentence as is.)

[11:37 AM] Merry Holmgren
The three paragraphs starting with "In person class registrants..." are displaying in a different size font.

Add updated verbage

One thing I think might be good to add is “and Wi-Fi” at the end of the following sentence (fourth paragraph from bottom):

Those participating in person will need to bring their own laptop and power cord. We will provide power outlets and Wi-Fi.

Update some content

Okay, Vern, here’s how I envision the trainings page.

Add New links to the Nav Bar

Would it be possible to add a couple more links to the maps (https://maps.azmag.gov/) and training (https://maps.azmag.gov/trainings.html) pages, and update the title of the GIS portal(https://geodata-azmag.opendata.arcgis.com/)? I was thinking of adding a MAG Data (https://data.azmag.gov/) and a RAD Data (https://rad.azmag.gov/), such as below:

image

And then, for the Open GIS Portal, update the links thus:
image

This would help link our tools as well as give a bit of clarity and continuity to the links. (Feel free to format them the same way, as well, if that’s not a hassle.)

Add registration links for 2024

Add Urban areas map to page

Could I get this viewer added to maps.azmag.gov? It’s the new Urban Areas Explorer…

https://bit.ly/AZUrbanAreas

Assuming the icon is the same size, you can use the graphic at I:\Projects\WebApps\images\icons\maps-page\output\Urban.png.

The viewer is “Statewide” but we really focus on our own region. So either flag is fine with me.

As far as a blurb, how about “View urban areas for the state of Arizona from Census years 2020 and 2010, as well as current FHWA smoothed urbanized areas.”

Updates to training page 12/23/2022

Here are the confirmed dates for the 2023 training, and the link to the one-stop shopping for registration for all dates and options. Please remove the word “tentatively” in the first paragraph and update the training dates and link.

Thurs. Jan. 19
Wed. Mar. 22
Thurs. May 18
Thurs. July 27
Wed. Sept. 27
Thurs. Nov. 16

I am still working at getting all the individual registration sites ready, but the January training is there, and when they are all published, they will be available through this one link to the 2023 MAG Maps and Data Collection. So, posting it now is fine.

Here are some other updates for the training page:

Also, in the third paragraph (“Participants choose…”) use the single word “livestreamed” instead of “live streamed”. AP Style says it’s one word (even though Merriam Webster uses two words) and we are committed to the AP Style.

In the sixth paragraph (“In person class registrants…”) add a hyphen to make it “In-person class registrants…”. Ignore the seventh paragraph usage. It’s fine as is.

In the third from last paragraph (“All registrants will be emailed…”) change the sentence to “All registrants to the VIRTUAL class will be emailed the hands-on exercises before the workshop begins.”

Let me know if you have any questions or other insights.

Update training links for 2022

Please change just the first paragraph of the training page from Click on a 2021 date to go to an Eventbrite registration link to get started. (with dates as links)
to Choose a workshop date on our Eventbrite page to open its registration form. Workshops for 2022 are scheduled for February 24, April 28, June 30, August 18, and October 27.

The URL for the Eventbrite link is https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/mag-maps-and-data-99739

The rest of the page can stay as is.

This page needs to be updated no later than Monday, January 31 to be current for the announcement in the RADigest being distributed next week.
