For example, when using the class option fdefn and putting a footnote in a definition, the footnote is lost and not printed on the page.

This is a bug from the framed package, not the mathhw class. I will look for alternatives to the framed package to use in its place.

In the meantime, it is up to the user to avoid this issue.

Undefined environment errors are thrown when using the fdefn option for the class file.
