awesome-selfhosted's Issues

Guacamole is not proprietary

The list says Guacamole is proprietary, however the website says:

Guacamole is and will always be free and open source software. It is licensed under the MIT License.

Ensure all software has license

We need to ensure that all software has their license attached, in the format:

Software Name - Brief Description (Extra Software Links) - License

Artistic License

We need to add the Artistic License to our license section.

It is currently being used in the following projects in our list:

add Ajenti to Monitoring and Administration

Ajenti Core
Ajenti Core is a web interface development framework which includes a web server, IoC container, a simplistic web framework and set of core components aiding in client-server communications.

Ajenti Panel

Ajenti Panel consists of plugins developed for the Ajenti Core and a startup script, together providing a server administration panel experience. The Panel’s plugins include: file manager, terminal, notepad, etc.

ipMagnet (File Sharing and Synchronization) Invalid?

ipMagnet is currently part of our File Sharing and Synchronization section, however it does not allow for any sort of file sharing or synchronization. The demo shows a simple web interface which displays your publicly facing IP address.

Unless I've missed features this shouldn't be on our list as the same can be achieved by a quick Google Search.

Reduce overlap with awesome-sysadmin

Followup to #81; our list currently overlaps with @n1trux's https://github.com/n1trux/awesome-sysadmin in many areas. To prevent overlap, avoid NIH syndrome and decrease maintenance on the 2 lists, I suggest merging some of our lists sections as follows:

Import and remove from awesome-sysadmin:

Delegate and link to awesome-sysadmin:

Network and computer systems management software would live in awesome-sysadmin, while we keep communication systems and non-IT-related services and applications here. I'm still unsure about Mail Servers and Web Servers. Maybe this could be an exception and be present in both lists (they are important for both). Not sure about Analytics either.

@n1trux would this be ok? Everything here can be discussed

BrowserID / Mozilla Persona

Hey,

I might have missed something, but how is this related to self-hosting? It seems like the logins go through Mozilla, and I can't find the source code anywhere.

We might need to transfer this to the non-free list.

Redmatrix

You could rename Red -> Redmatrix. The project is currently being rebranded to hubzilla.

closed source apps are not awesome

Well, as stated on reddit already, my opinion is that closed source apps are not awesome.

What is the point in self-hosting applications when you can't trust them? They could harm the security and integrity of the whole server system.

Update Github project description

I thought we could update the Github project description following the current one:

Selfhosting is the process of locally hosting and managing applications instead of renting from SaaS providers. This is a list of Free Software network services and web applications which can be hosted locally.

or just the second part. @Kickball I don't have necessary permissions to edit the description

Find and remove unmaintained projects

Hi Edward, I personally found awesome-selfhosted awesome!

It would be nice to sort out new and maintained project over old ones. I know markdown will not be enough to make it possible without duplication and to avoid having to deal with html/js would be easier.

There are so many good project I'd like to install on my server. But the list is simply too long for me.
For example I'll rather try out RedMatrix over Friendica.
Another example, some months ago I wanted to try Jyraphe or Dropcenter. But I found out Jyraphe last updates is from 2010 (ouch) and Dropcenter from 2 years ago. I think they are no longer maintained and for me I don't find it useful to list them.

Ensure all software has a programming language

Followup to #14
All new additions should have both license and their main programming language referenced in the list.
Requirement added to CONTRIBUTING section.
Edit: software without license nor language tag can be found with egrep -v "\" README.md`

Awesome Badge Display

Awesome has requested in their issue 253 that awesome lists on their list show this badge.

Awesome

I don't see a problem doing this, but I don't want to end up with more than 1 or 2 buttons for lists containing out list.

What do you think @nodiscc?

Reddit

Reddit is open source, and should be added to this repo.

I'd imagine it would best fit into Social Networks and Forums?

CPAL Version 1

We need to add the Common Public Attribution License Version 1.0 (CPAL) to our license section.

It is currently being used in the following projects in our list:

Add a programming language tag?

Should we also reference the main source code language for each project? eg. Python or PHP
It helps knowing if the app just needs a LAMP stack to run, or a whole another setup like python-wsgi, nodejs..

By the way, thanks for starting this project!
