Noticeable lag when inputting text

example:

clue: "17. Clearwater's neighbor across the bay"
clue: "18. Taj Mahal's locale"

On desktop:
Click on game avatar
Enter Google email address and PW, complete Google 2FA
I'm returned to the game, not signed in
Click on game avatar again
Select Google account (no PW entry necessary)
I'm signed in and my avatar is visible

On mobile:
Click on game avatar
Select Google account (already signed in)
I'm returned to the game, not signed in
Repeating the process doesn't fix it

7/28/22 - tested after most recent performance improvements:

• highlight active word and letter
• toggle orientation when clicking on active letter
• clue changes when toggling orientation
• space bar toggles orientation
• tab navigates to next word
• clicking on clue toggles the orientation
• input fills in square
• goes correctly to next square
• navigation by clicking arrows
• navigation by shift + arrow buttons
• clear puzzle
• info page opens
• backspace
• virtual keyboard buttons
• check square, word, puzzle
• autocheck
• reveal square
• reveal word
• reveal puzzle
• moving to next square sometimes (see bug)
• rebus
• refocus on square after selecting rebus
• refocus on square after selecting pencil

Bugs:

• After tabbing from last word to first word, cursor does not advance after inputting first character, but stays on first square
• response time is too slow for user input. noticeable lag.
• Pressing tab after clicking on clue actually tabs through keyboard instead of staying on board (need to move handleKeyDown to App Component probably)
• hint menu doesn't close after choosing option
• display html codes correctly (see #9)
