virtual-identity's Issues

Used/created column sort order

They're not sorting properly. The current format leads to this kind of "sorting":

Mon Feb 19 19:35:19 2012
Mon Feb 5 03:12:15 2012
Mon Jan 9 21:36:15 2013
Sat Dec 19 07:38:40 2012

and so on.

Please change the column format to YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS

So it would be:

2013-02-18 16:30:28
2012-11-22 19:27:57

that way the string-based reordering of those columns will be done in the proper order.

Plus, it's a lot easier to read.

Mail-Reply doesn't work correctly if sender is a mailing-list

Hi,

i've found a bug within the mail-reply function in thunderbird. It happens if answer a mail from a mailing-list.

Mail-Data:

  • My mail-address is * * *x.de
  • The senders "From" (in German: Von) mail-adress is * * *@hotmail.de.
  • The "To"-Field (in German: An) is an adress from a mailing-list.

screenie_1

Please have a look to "To". The recevier-mail-adress isn't my address. It's the * * *a.de-Address. My supposition is, that virtual-identity took this mail-adress for the senders-field. Another screenie:

screenie_2

You will see now, that virtual-identity took * * * a.de as "From", but my virtual-id is * * * x.de. Now, I have to change the from-mail-address to a correct one, because it's not "good" to send a mail "from a mailing list" ;)
The next recipient "To" in the list is * * * @hotmail.de. That's ok, but * * * a.de is missing.

Wished-Mail-Data:

  • From: * * * x.de
  • To: * * *@hotmail.de, * * * a.de

Some-Mail-Data that might help you:

  • X-Envelope-To is correctly been set to * * *x.de
  • X-Envelope-From is set to * * *@hotmail.de, that's correct

Please push your tags

Hello,
I may be wrong but it seems that your git tags are not pushed to GitHub.
(The last visible tag being 0.9.33, while latest version is 0.9.36).
The (minor) issue is that when trying to build the extension locally, build.sh will name it according to git describe, which is (currently) 0.9.33-19-g3c60682 instead of 0.9.36.
A simple git push --tags should be all that is needed.
Thanks !

Intermittent failures

Firstly, thanks again for a great plugin. The single reason I use Thunderbird.

Second, is GitHub a good place for tickets? It's much easier for me than trac, but I can put this on trac if that's better for you, just let me know.

My issue is that sometimes the identity is updated, and sometimes not. I thought it was on an email by email basis, so I started logging that with debugging enabled, but now it works. I can't reproduce the issue consistently. It usually works more reliably if I already have one reply window open.

How can I best debug this issue? Should I collect the debug logs when it succeeds and when it fails, and look for differences? Here's a summary of my platform / addons / etc from the debug info.

VirtualIdentity Data Storage cannot set Base identity

Using the VirtualIdentity Data Storage I can not change the Base identity:

Reproduce:

  • VirtualIdentity Data Storage
  • Select entry & "Edit"
  • Set SMTP & Base Identity
  • "OK"
  • SMTP is stored, Base Identity still shows empty

Background:

Setup:

  • Thunderbird 52.4.0 (64bit)

Headers duplicated with SmartTemplate4

When using Virtual Identity along with SmartTemplate4, the reply headers generated by SmartTemplate4 are duplicated.

I've been having this issue for many years already but could not figure out the relationship with Virtual Identity.

This issue has already been reported a long time ago here but was closed:
https://www.absorb.it/virtual-id/ticket/428

I also reported the issue in the SmartTemplate4 repo since I cannot figure out the responsability:
RealRaven2000/SmartTemplates#2

Versions:
Thunderbird: 60.7.0
Virtual Identity: 0.10.3 (2018-09-28)
SmartTemplate4 2.0 (2018-12-28)

Can only send email to addresses in the Thunderbird address book

Recently I can only send email to addresses in the Thunderbird address book. Any other addresses result in a pop-up dialog containing:

virtualIdentity Extension Error
sorry for the inconveniance
try to save your email and restart!
please send the bug-report to fix this issue

I have Virtual Identity 0.9.36 last updated 25.nov.2017 ant Thunderbird 52.4.0 (64-bit) on Arch Linux.

[REQ] templates for return email address names

Hello.

When I reply to an email VI automatically fills up "From" field with the same data of "To" field in the original email. This is great. However it would be very handy to be able automatically add name to the "From" field if the original "To" didn't have one.

So to give you an example. Received mail was sent to: "My Name <blah@example.com>"
During reply the "from" field will have: "My Name <blah@example.com>"
That's great.
Next example, received mail was sent to: "blah@example.com"
Reply from will be: "blah@example.com"
No name.

The proposed feature would allow us automatically fill up name for each specific virtual email when non was given or even optionally overwrite with preset.

Thank you.

Virtual Identity for Android

Sorry if this is more of a support request or plain question than a bug, but I am looking for the functionality of Virtual Identity with Android. Any tips? I have various roles I fill and use different FROM for this purpose.

Won't be upgrading to version 68

As others have said - it's only when TB breaks VI that you remember it was there :)

It's absolutely vital that I have VI running so I've just downgraded back to v67 and won't be upgrading again until VI functionality is restored somehow - be that upgraded add-on or, even better, it's built into TB directly :D :D

Virtual address mappings stored/overwritten even though already exist

An observation: Setting the SMTP & base identity, next sending works as expected, but the next after that did not anymore (changed base identity).
I assume that happens because it stores the used address again and overwrites my settings. Should it overwrite existing virtual address mappings?

I could fix it by setting Storage->Identity->storing -> store base&smtp.

But should stored identities be overwritten this way, btw. "ask before overwriting identities in your storage" is set.

But maybe thats intended behavior?

Regards

Sended Mails are not saved in correct IMAP-Folder

Hello,

yesterday, I've updated Thunderbird to version 38.0.1. Now, I have a problem with your extension. If I send a mail, the copy of the sended mail will not be saved in the "Sended"-Folder of my IMAP-Account. Instead of saving in the IMAP-Folder "Sended", Virtual-Identity saves the mail in the Local-Folders "Sended"-Folder.

My steps to reproduce:

  • Download a fresh portable version of Thunderbird
  • Install your addon
  • Register my email-adress
  • Send a mail

Unable to send mail

This never seems to happen for the first message I send, but when I start to send more emails, it does start to happen. Clicking the send button, or the save buttons, do nothing. No action. It does not try to send or save. It's like the button has no action attached to it.

I've never seen it happen on the first email, but it doesn't always happen on the second. Sometimes it can run all day before it occurs. It's been much more stable since enabling debug mode however.

Enabling debug mode, here is the final line with the error. I have the full log, bug there is a great deal of personal information in it I'd rather not have in the public domain. :)

Postbox

Hi, I just switched from Thunderbird to Postbox 3 after all these years, and what a breath of fresh air! So much faster, bug-free, modern, better support for Gmail, social avatars, built-in support for keyboard-based filing to folders, support for OmniFocus... what more could you ask for?

Well, Virtual Identity!

Anyone care to try to make VI compatible with Postbox?

Extra pane in Thunderbird 52

I've just updated to Thunderbird 52 and Virtual-Identity appears to cause a new blank pane to appear at the bottom of every message window.

The identity selection drop down also seems to be broken in the compose window.
