The new version seems to have fixed the driver crash, it's working completely fine now.
Well, it's extremely laggy, but on the other hand... that's pretty much everything on my PC... :D

That's very interesting. I currently have no idea what could cause this bug, as the shader seems to completely remove the blue and green channels. What version of cogl is installed on your system?

yozoon avatar yozoon commented on September 15, 2024 1

Okay, now I was able to reproduce the issue with VMWare. This is indeed a very weird behaviour of the shader.

@Warmuser I just uploaded an updated version of the shader which fixed the strange coloring issue in VMWare Player for me. Would be great if you could test the changes on your system as well!

To make the shader debugging process more efficient I created a stand-alone GJS app, which uses the current GLSL shader from the extension. As of the moment the issue seems to be AMD graphics specific, so my hands are a little tied in this regard because I can only test on Intel and Nvidia Systems. I'd really appreciate it if you tried to play around with the shader source in the repository of the stand-alone app. My current suspicion is that the GLSL compiler on AMD systems interprets some GLSL commands in an unintended way, but unfortunately I have been unable to find similar bug reports when I googled the topic. Please report your findings in the Issues section of the stand-alone app!

cogl 1.22.2

If comment line shader.glsl color.rgb = color.rgb * brightness; It works, but the colors are wrong.

I have the same issue on Antergos. Also with Gnome 3.24.2 and cogl 1.22.2. If it helps, I have an RX 480 GPU with AMDGPU 1.2.0-1

yozoon avatar yozoon commented on September 15, 2024

@webmastak could you explain what you mean by "it works"? Because on the screenshots you uploaded the blur seems to work, but the colors are wrong, so I don't quite understand what changed when you commented out the mentioned line in the shader.

webmastak avatar webmastak commented on September 15, 2024

With a commented line color.rgb = color.rgb * brightness; It does not work in red, but colors are not natural!

I also have that issue plus it's crashing my GPU or GPU driver... using the radeon driver on an AMD Radeon HD 8400, this is the crashlog from journalctl: https://pastebin.com/93UZT8mi
EDIT: Changed the paste exposure from Private to Unlisted... oops...

@Warmuser I got a similar result when I tried that extension in a virtual machine, using the VirtualBox drivers.

from gnome-shell-extension-blyr.

Warmuser avatar Warmuser commented on September 15, 2024

@ManicRobot these extension was work really well on ubuntu 16.10 with Virtualbox . But a month I switched to Manjaro 17.0.2 on VMWare Workstation 12 Player which is much stable then VB for me. Thats because up to now I'm doing testing to learn Linux before to install the Distro as my main system. In the future I will install it to my physical machine. But I don't think the bug depends directly from te VM :)

Warmuser avatar Warmuser commented on September 15, 2024

@yozoon Thanks, I will update the extension and give you a response! :)

Since there was no new report of this issue for nearly a year, I'm closing it now.
