After another discussion we came to the conclusion that we don't need to replay the WAL as we are doing now, we can raise Tmax (largestDeletedTimestamp) and keep track of the uncommitted and aborted transactions, ignoring the committed transactions altogether (since they are less than Tmax the SO correctly assumes they are committed).
