I think as a first iteration it is already a great step to use the core test suite to test the theme. We can then consider further testing implementations later, I'd suggest. Using the core test suite is also less problematic in terms of finding a framework to use - as that one is certainly maintained.

I'd love to see that included. Because most of the topics online are only about unit testing in WordPress, and there is not that much talk or information about how to properly run integration tests for themes or plugins. +1 from me :)

I recently used wp scaffold theme-tests
to set up unit tests in Travis CI for some theme-specific utility functions and found the process quite straightforward. Whatever process is decided upon Iād be happy to help contribute some tests.

I'm a huge advocate of both unit (in isolation without WP running) and integration (with WP and any other plugins running) tests.
