This sounds okay to me.
Would the field then be empty if multiple values are detected for that field? There's an edge case here if someone wants to clear the value in all those items with different values, but it's probably unlikely enough to not implement it.

This one has been completed, the edit button now accepts selecting multiple items at once.
The UI automatically shows the common fields between the items, and only updates fields that have been changed.
Needs to be merged with #32 before merging with master
