Just to add what I would need to do with ogr2ogr and the WFS driver.
I should have an XML file like:
road.xml
<OGRWFSDataSource>
<URL>http://demo.opengeo.org/geoserver/ows?service=wfs&typeName=osm:roads</URL>
</OGRWFSDataSource>
Then, calling ogr2ogr from the command line like:
ogr2ogr -f "ESRI Shapefile" roads.zip road.xml
, should convert the roads layer returned as GML from the WFS response as a Shapefile.
from ogr2ogr.
