With the perspective of this being a demo site, the footer seems fine to me as-is, as it’s somewhat representative of the content a real site would have there. If we want the footer to explain this is a demo that’s fine too, but that’s just a different approach rather than improving the accuracy of the current content.
Note the README section you mention is only a very handwavy record of how the content was sourced, it’s not meant as a public domain dedication. Wikimedia content isn’t "public domain" in the legal sense to start with, it’s CC BY-SA 4.0.
