At this point, a "how I got it to work" document may suffice.

Things are becoming clearer on this front, although we may have to be patient to reap the benefits. Following the latest advice from this reticulate vignette, we could (should?) encourage users to use a conda environment called "r-reticulate"
.
Then installation of the Altair Python package could be as simple as:
py_install("altair")
A couple of caveats here:
- the function
py_install()
exists only in the dev version of reticulate. - the conda distribution for Altair (v2) is not yet available.
However, this promises a robust, pain-free installation process.
