Great suggestion! Date scales are on our list for the next minor release. Internally Vega uses D3 scales, so the addition should be relatively straightforward. Pull requests are welcomed, but due to the importance of this issue you can reasonably expect it to be resolved within the next few days.

Here's an extremely hacky way to get something sort of working in the meantime: before you load any specs: set d3.scale.time = d3.time.scale. Then you can set the scale type to 'time' and get the default time formatting, assuming your scale values are something d3 can turn into Dates.

Date scales were added as of commit 3169b9b and are in the v1.1.0 release. I also added a new "lifelines" example to showcase time scales and date parsing: http://trifacta.github.com/vega/editor/index.html?spec=lifelines
