Interesting idea. However, the current model is that data transforms are defined in the spec and only data set instances are provided via the runtime view.data(...)
method. Among other concerns, the suggested change would break backwards compatibility. I'm closing the issue, but we might consider ways to enabling more flexible transforms in the future. For now, we expect that any heavy data manipulation is done outside of Vega, in which case the view.data(...)
method should be sufficient for most needs.

Understood. However, I will point out that my proposed syntax doesn't need to break backwards compatibility: if an object is passed in to data() then the current behavior is used, but if an array is passed in then the data is parsed in the same way as the data array is handled when it is it is part of the spec.
