One parameter to auto-choose based on memory might be the number of threads.

Ok, version 1.0.1 is out and includes some tuning options:
-e for 'extreme' xz compression
-q for setting the size of the block queue
-f for setting the block size/dict size ratio. The default has also been changed from 1.0 to 2.0
In addition, we allocate memory on demand instead of pre-allocating. Hopefully all of this helps users adjust performance to their taste, though it isn't as automatic as I'd like, yet.
