But then, how can you "brute force"? I mean e.g. PIN with only 4 numbers can take over a week to unlock...

Yeah, but I mean, usually bruteforcing is made against e.g. encrypted file system or hash or something and not running software. That's why there is even super computers used for bruteforce.

In cyber security we use the same term, bruteforce, for online or offline bruteforcing. I'm open to alternative phrasing that is more accessible to the general technical public.
