This was working as designed.

The design was that if user makes a custom type, and don't specify custom way to encode/decode it, it would be encoded/decoded based on the kind alone.
[]byte would encode/decode as raw bytes.
but type Binary []byte would encode/decode as an array of integers (not raw bytes).

On further thinking, I see where what happened is not in line with what a typical user would expect. I'm siding with your expectations and putting special case code for anything that looks like a sequence of bytes (ie []byte, [X]byte) to encode/decode as raw bytes, whether addressable or not.

I had to leave what I was doing and think about this one for a while, so I could get comfortable with the decision.
