My git clone lives at ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/[email protected]
There is no need to build anything (except translations) if you install it that way. Extensions.gnome.org should have the latest version, but you will possibly still hit some bugs in combination with gs 3.8

BTW: Just double checked it: You're right, there's no easy way to figure out the version number.

But it is not clear how to install and activate the extension? is the name of the directory significant, i.e. does it have to be that exact email address you quote? If so, then why not add that to the readme? Also, are we supposed to use gnome-tweak-tool to activate it? Or gnome-shell-extension-tool? Or activate the version from extensions.gnome.org and then copy your git contents in?

Also, are you saying GS 3.8 is not yet really supported?

That lack of version ID is a glaring omission in the extensions.gnome.org infrastructure, i.e. something Jasper SP should address.
