It looks like you're missing a $ before the a; it should read:

<h1>Hello world! {{ $a }}</h1>

Woops in the rush of testing I left that off. But I re ran it with the $ still same error.

It depends on what version you're using; if you're using the dev-master version as opposed to the last tagged release (v0.6.4), then any variables defined in config.php are accessible under the $config namespace, so it would be:

<h1>Hello world! {{ $config->a }}</h1>

That's about to change, though, in a release I'm preparing as we speak; I'll let you know when that new release is up, at which point we'll update the documentation as well.
