That should work fine as long as you have some way of turning on your dust collector. I know you can buy power bars that can be controlled by arduino, or if your board has wifi you could look into a wifi outlet.
I went the simpler way and hook my tools up to something like this to make it turn on with the tool. They make 220v versions too.

Don't be afraid to experiment with your arduino.. if you have trouble changing this program take a step back and try making a couple simpler programs first.

It's been a long time since I looked at the code.. if you aren't using the current sensors you will have an easier time understanding it if you look at this version from before I added the current sensing code (it's simpler).

If you've never done any arduino programming you will want to make some of your own small programs to get familiar with it before trying to change this... I'd suggest just getting it working then make small changes and undo them if something stops working.
Your idea for having a contact switch should work fine although it adds some wiring to your setup.. you may run into some interferences running those wires long distances.. if so try twisting them or using something shielded like network cable.
