Can you maybe do kubectl get pods -A in the workload cluster?
I would like to see whether you installed the necessary components. Please note that the CCM and CNI have to be installed in order for the workload cluster to be operational.

CNI is there, CCM is not.
Why would CCM be mandatory even as I have not set kubelet etc to use cloud provider?
The node is ready and does not have any CCM related taints.

Aha, that explains it.
TBH, the docs do not IMO super clearly say that CCM is 100% mandatory on the child cluster. But I now get that the CCM managed providerID field on Node objects are used to map those nodes to CAPI Machine objects.

yes. If you have an idea how to improve the docs for this project or the CAPI project, then feel free to open a PR! I will close this for now. If you realize the original problem is not related to the CCM, feel free to re-open.
