Could you provide a simple test case to replicate the issue? I have a hunch this is due to the extensions you have installed rather than the Symphony core.

What version of MySQL are you running?
Very unusual that using the Textbox fixes the problem as it's createTable statement is identical to the Textarea's. Can you verify the Textbox is actually creating the required table? I wonder if it's just better at hiding the error.

Please see this stackoverflow thread and let us know if this fixes the problem. IIRC you were having issues with languages so I wonder if in your fiddlings the table collation/database collation has been altered.

MySQL 5.5.9
Textbox does indeed work perfectly, and the tables are there.
I will look into this issue with the info you provided. I'll also test it without so many extensions. Thanks!
