This makes sense to me. However, I'd suggest to make canonical a global flag, e.g. canonical_type_str, because needing control on this is probably a rarely used feature. This way we wouldn't pollute type_str signature even more than it already is.
I suppose it can default to True as the only impact is efficiency of sorting and type_str is not a performance critical function. It's only used for logging and in error case, isn't it?
