It is also currently possible to completely soft-lock the use of the tool spec editor by disabling all of the widgets:
In this state the only thing that you can do to get any of the docks back is to close the editor and open it again, after which the bar containing the Toolbox logo and hamburger menu is brought back. From there the rest of the UI elements can be brought back to life by right clicking.

We should switch from the hamburger menu to proper menu and then the widget choices would become easier to use and find from the proper menu. But your suggestion to remove the 'close crosses' is a good short-term measure as long as the widget choices go to the hamburger menu at the same time (Toolbox logo is too hard to find).
