Lars brought up the issue of the random size of the paintings to me. In his 'Metadata' doc he stated their actual sizes in centimeters so we have the data.

As part of my import process I just set the width automatically to 1 meter, and the height proportionally to the pixel height of the painting image.
The way I was intended sizes to be corrected is by setting the scale_x/y/z columns to the correct width of the painting in meters.
