Sparrow will try to connect automatically, but only if it was previously connected (or trying to connect).

Ok, I changed it so that only a mouse click on the server toggle in the lower right corner will set your mode to offline - previously other events could cause you to go offline which could affect the 'mode' user setting which controls auto-reconnect on startup. Also, successfully making a test connection to the server in the preferences server setup will set the mode to online.
Let me know if this resolves the issue.
