Traced it to an encoding error in the exported xml file, but I can't tell what it is. This section

It Python is choking on, there is a weird space where it would read "Ciarán Walsh's" Blog" in the title attribute. Deleting that fixes it and lets the exporter run. Not sure if that is something that can be looked for?

How were you able to trace the problem to the title? I have the same problem.

I had a similar issue. Some atom links were malformed. I ran my wordpress-export.xml file through XMLLint and deleted the lines flagged with errors. If you have TextMate just use Bundles > XML > Validate Syntax.
