Add special handling for Twitter commands about twitter-ruby

Just out of curiosity, what does twitter.com do when you attempt to tweet the above text? What logic would you propose be used to determine whether a post that begins with "DM" should be a direct message or a status update?

The twitter gem could use the following heuristic:

IF first three characters are "DM " (case-insensitive)
AND it's followed by a valid twitter user name
AND that user is following the poster
THEN post a direct message
ELSE post a status update

However, this would require at least one additional API call, which seems a little excessive for what seems like an edge case. Is this a common problem for you?

If twitter.com's behavior is the same as the twitter gem and you think it could be improved, I would suggest filing this as an issue with Twitter.
