Are you using some fancy data-structure (i. e. not array-,matrix-like) for per-character diffs?

Right now I try this defaultdict:

self.buffer = defaultdict(lambda: defaultdict(lambda: Char(data=' ')))

The overhead of using dicts instead of lists seems to be really minimal for me, and it helps a lot for implementing the features that I need.

I think we can parametrize Screen by buffer class (default to list) and support any container as long as it's a MutableSequence. Will this work for you?

Not sure yet, it's a little early to know whether that approach will work. I'll keep you posted.
