You do need the middleware if you don't want to implement some very complex logic.
RecordModifiedError is defined in

django-concurrency/src/concurrency/exceptions.py

You can customize what should happen in case of conflicts overriding CONCURRENCY_ CALLBACK or CONCURRENCY_HANDLER409 (@see https://django-concurrency.readthedocs.io/en/latest/settings.html)

The first one is the low-level callback the other is the view where the middleware redirect the browser in case os conflicts.

That clarifies greatly. I got it working now. Thanks for the help. I added "from concurrency.exceptions import RecordModifiedError", in my views.py and that solved the problem.
