We need to think this one thru a little bit. Because on the one hand, someone might just want to specify the filename. On the other, someone might want to load from a specific file and bypass the spec builder (your use case).
There is yet a third that I have been wanting to incorporate for a while: spec merging. While we do have the raw() method that allows you to add to the spec, there is not a good merge method yet. This all feels to me like it is part of the same enhancement.
