It’s because of the nextgroup=rustModPath part of this line:

syn keyword rustKeyword use nextgroup=rustModPath skipwhite skipempty

Given that rustModPath isn’t contained, there doesn’t seem to me to be any point in this at present beyond the observed result that a first section of self:: or super:: will not be highlighted as a keyword but rather as a module path. I have a feeling that there was some significance in it beyond that in the past, but I’m not sure. There isn’t now, anyway.

It seems to me that there are two reasonable courses of action possible:

  • highlight self and super as all other module names in paths everywhere rather than as other keywords;
  • do not highlight self and super differently anywhere (remove the nextgroup=rustModPath).
