If I recall correctly, 1.8.7 always reports as 32bit on OSX, which would explain why the binary gem is not found. You can tell with
ruby -rubygems -e 'puts Gem::Platform.new(RUBY_PLATFORM).to_s'
What is the output of that?

Yep, that's the problem. The gems I pushed in #49 were for x86_64. That said, as I mentioned in that ticket, you can probably just rename those gems to your platform and be fine since libv8 is statically linked. We actually tested a libv8 built on 10.6 on 10.8 and it appeared to work just fine.
