Hey @p-sforza thanks for reporting. And thanks for the Docker, made it really easy to reproduce.
I'm not sure why setting c99 on GSTD_CFLAGS didn't work, but should've. You can configure your project as
./configure CFLAGS="CFLAGS="-std=c99 -D_GNU_SOURCE"
and it will build fine.
Having said that, I do believe it's a bug and that we should build with the c99 standard as default. I'll push a fix.
