I could see a possible problem with allowing anyone on the platform, but allowing an option for server members could be good
from backend.
The default will remain unchanged and there will be options to pick.
Having dms completely open will for example serve well people, who list their Revolt account as a contact elsewhere, so people finding them on other places can message them immediately, rather then adding them as friends or joining servers for it.
I agree there may arise problems possibly, but that's where you can use block or pick another option and for people who think taking them is worth it, the option should exist
from backend.
Totally agreed, there should be a setting for your whole account to allow or disallow and server specific setting: allow / default(account setting) / disallow
from backend.
This is currently being discussed as being added into a future update, option should be located under a "Privacy & Safety" tab in settings.

As for this, we could add an Instagram-style "Allow incoming communication" or "Block" buttons under the incoming DM.

Could be added as different toggle options, example: "Allow direct messages from"
from backend.
There should also be message requests to go with this, kinda like what Matrix does.
