The best place to do auth is in a "ready" event handler.

I've updated that example to show how to use it.

Really appreciate the update. I'm sure I'm missing something but still no luck with the example. I believe the issue is that in order for the "ready" event to be fired it has to successfully complete an "info" command. That command fails without auth. If I call createClient with "no_ready_check" the "ready" event isn't fired.

I can make it work if I do the auth on "connect" and call createClient with no_ready_check.

Oh, I see what you mean. I hadn't figured on INFO not working, but I guess auth breaks that. Auth is kind of magical, so I guess I need to work up a scheme for supporting it. I was hoping that the ready event would be it, alas.
