Are you sure this should be handled by this crate and not the caller? I mean, memmap2 is unsafe by design. It's just a thin cross-platform API wrapper. We do not provide any logic beyond that.

That's a fair question!
I expected make_exec (which is not unsafe) to do everything necessary to make the anonymous map usefully executable; it's not doing so, which is why I considered this a library issue.
Still, I understand your point of view. If you want to leave the crate as-is, should I open up a PR to the make_exec docstring warning about this corner case?

I think doc comment would be fine. I'm not an expert in this area and I'm not sure there is an easy solution. This crate is just an abstraction over the system API. Nothing more.
