According to git bisect, this behavior has been introduced by rails/marcel@8080070 via rails/marcel#94
I do not know if this is an expected behavior change at marcel or not because it changes something about illustrator/pdf, not text

Found the regression.
Fixed in rails/marcel#99 and released in Marcel 1.0.4.
