For instance, here's one usage I'd like/need for pytest:

        package_files = (
            str(file)
            for dist in importlib_metadata.api.distributions()
            if any(ep.group == "pytest11" for ep in dist.entry_points)
            for file in dist.files
        )

We clarified elsewhere that what Anthony meant was that he expected to be able to use importlib_metadata.distributions() but only importlib_metadata.api.distributions() was available, and that distributions() should be available in the top-level namespace along other supported API functions.
