I'd also like to thank Anthony Elizondo (@complex) for spending a few hours of his Sunday helping me get additional performance diagnostics for hyper, helping reveal this problem.

This behaviour means that in use-cases dominated by large downloads (e.g. twitter API access, 200 tweets per request), hyper is slower than the standard requests stack. I'm willing to bet (though I haven't profiled it yet) that almost all of this is in per-frame processing (e.g. WINDOWUPDATE).

Right, so I've implemented a pluggable layer for flow control management built around the BaseFlowControlManager class (which is a crappy name, but there we are). This should allow me to switch out the default with something that has better logic.
