This looks like the issue I had with [[http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=594824|SDL_ttf 2.0.9 on Debian squeeze]]. It was fixed in [[http://hg.libsdl.org/SDL_ttf/rev/0f803b00e43b|SDL_ttf 2.0.10]].

Well, there seems to be some catch here.
My pygame is a bit out of date, as it's still 1.9.1, even though that version went out of the tree awhile ago.

However, if I take fonty.py straight out of the old tarball, I'm unable to reproduce the crash.
Though my system differs significantly from one in the original report:
x86, python-2.7.2-r2, freetype-2.4.6, llibsdl-1.2.14-r6, sdl-ttf-2.0.10.

Though I've seen the post on the mailing list from a user that could reproduce it.
However, pygame-1.9.2_pre3082, that's now in the tree, is a quite recent addition, so I should be able to reproduce, if it were still possible.

Given certain bug, glibc version might matter here - my tests are on 2.13-r4 (the revision will be significant here, if it's that bug).
