Scaccarium is the Lating word for chess/chessboard. I don't think it's taken either.

Gnome chess is already taken. Bellum sounds good!

Yeah, Scaccarium might also be a little to long.
Only thing is, if Bellum sonds to much like Belly or something?..

Also:
Preda: plunder, booty, spoils of war, loot, gain, prey.
Impeto: to attack, head for.
Oppugno: to fight against, attack, assault, assail
Lesio/laesio: rhetorical attack; wounding.
Grassor: go about, go ahead, proceed, attack.

Well, I like the name PyChess - I wouldn't have looked at it if I hadn't seen that it
is written in my favorite programming language. As the term "pychess" would not be
used for anything else information about pychess (especially the website) is very
easy to find. Fianchetto, by the way, is taken:
http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/fianchetto.
Just stick to pychess - it's more important to have a unique name that allows people
to find the project than to have some fancy cool name but nobody knows what the
project is about. PyChess is unique and just by seeing the name I know what it's
about: python and chess.

Hm, the only pychess domain name that is taken, is pychess.org, which is taken by
Pennsylvania Youth chess

Intelligence: Ingqondo
Village: Umuzi
Wonder: Zibuza

Ander another latin one:

To wonder at exceedingly: Emiror

PyChess has already been used in a Python chess library
(http://cheeseshop.python.org/pypi/PyChess/1.0.2a) and in another chess program
(http://py.vaults.ca/parnassus/apyllo.py/77689886.955584127). I think the latter is dead.

Cabanga sounds good!

Cabanga also gives very few hits on google (32,300; cabanga chess gives 178), and
cabanga.org is free.

Only problem might be as david states "than to have some fancy cool name but nobody
knows what the project is about". Will cabanga be too alien and reject people just
looking for a program with chess or board in it?..

I think celobox on the mailinglist is nice. We use the Chronological list of FIDE
masters: Lucena, Ruylopez, Grecco, Philidor, Stauton, Anderssen, Morphy, Steinitz,
Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Reti, Bogoljubov, Breyer, Botvnnik, Smyslov, Thal,
Petrossian, Spassky, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Annand, Kramnnik.
Then 0.7/0.8 will be named: "PyChess Philidor" I think it looks quite good in
graphics like the attached.
I also think the font signals the right things. What do you think?

I think the listed masters are not all "good enough" (Reti, Bogoljubov, Breyer).
I think we better to use only real word champions name's (except some unofficial
champions from early ages of course). So i changed this list a bit on wiki.
The graphics is fantastic!

I quite agree. PyChess is a good name, and using champions names's for releases shows
the project's progress.

As there doesn't seam to be any better names comming up, and the PyChess + subtitle
(not codename) Champion system works well, I don't think there is any reason to keep
this bug open further.
